Absent Without Leave... again

Well again I have disappeared off the face of the blogging planet this week, but now I'm back so fret ye not. I have been on nights, which hasn't helped, but the main problem was of the dodgy hard-disc variety, and fingers crossed all is fixed now.

Looking forward to
BBC Three's Glastonbury coverage, which starts tonight. I am particularly looking forward to The Flaming Lips, Sigur Ros, Lemon Jelly, James Lavelle (if they show it), Manics, Beth Gibbons and of course Radiohead. Seeing as I can't go, or maybe that should be can't afford to go, watching it on telly will have to do.

Had a rather worrying conversation with my mother on the phone last night. First, let me explain a bit about the lady in question: she spends 70% of her time involved in church activities, and is training to be a counsellor. She enjoys Cliff Richard and Elton John. Now, last night she said to me that she had seen Marilyn Manson on that Jonathon Ross show a while back, and said she would be interested to hear his music (somehow she hadn't managed to stay awake till the end of the tv programme to see it for herself). I tried to explain that maybe industrial goth-metal perhaps wasn't for her, but I feel a mid-life crisis on the horizon.

An amusing but potentially worrying tale about a "comedy terrorist" who managed to get into Windsor castle and get on to the stage while Prince William was making a birthday speech.

Strategy for staying awake...

Yes I'm due to start night shifts tomorrow, so I'm propping my eyes open with match-sticks, and am having a glass or two of vino, and listening to the new
Marilyn Manson album (something that loud is sure to keep me awake)... it's working so far, but for how long?

Hurray for the summer!

Had a nice day today - went to
Hyde Park to do a spot of sunbathing (I really must buy a bikini top and stop sunbathing in my vest-top and tracksuit bottoms.. no wonder I am pasty white!), and then had a wander to Tottenham Court Road to meet another friend for a coffee. Planning to spend tonight with glass of wine in hand, either watching telly or reading some of Pride and Prejudice. I'd obviously much rather be out on the town than stuck indoors with a book... but that's life for ya.

Dick F*cknall

Just watched Big Brother and Jools Holland. BB was decidedly dull, due to the blandness of tonight's evictees. Then tuned into Bo Selecta which was mildly amusing, and Jools Holland.
Mick Hucknall was attempting to sing a jazz number, and then (even worse) a Bob Dylan song. really, he should learn to give it up and do us all a favour. But as he was singing, I remembered a story I heard on the tv once about Martine McCutcheon throwing up all over his great ginger dreadlocks, and that made me chuckle. Also on the Jools Holland programme were a band called The Darkness, who I think Cheeks mentioned last week. I am undecided about this band... whilst I am all in favour of more long-haired noisy guitar bands on the music scene, I am not sure that a return to spandex catsuits and falsetto warbling is the right direction to turn. However, I remain open-minded on the matter.

Can I just say (and I know I am saying rather a lot today!) that Placebo are great. I especially like the Without You I'm Nothing album.... fairly heavy, depressing and angsty. And
Brian Molko is kind of sexy in an androgenous Camden Town weirdy way. Bloody marvellous. You can stick yer S Club right up yer jacksie.

Just found an interesting article about the "online disinhibition effect", which is the way in which people do things out of character when they're online. Does that include blogging?

Book club...

Me and my cousin are starting an internet reading group.. .just the two of us! We will be reading classics and modern books (no Danielle Steele here thank you!), and will try to read one book a month, and then have a discussion on MSN. Anyone else who's interested, get in touch. We're starting with
Pride and Prejudice on Monday.

I am contemplating yet another career change (yes I know I'm not even a qualified nurse yet and already I want to change!)... well it's kind of related to everything I've done before... I already have a degree in psychology, and am thinking of going back to it and trying to get on a doctorate course in clinical psychology. These courses are like Fort Knox to get into, and you need some sort of relevant experience and everything. but if I don't give it a go, I'll never know will I.

Other news: apparently today MI5 has said that it's only "
a matter of time" before the UK is hit by a terrorist attack. Marvellous.

Hot and hungover

Well yesterday evening went more swimmingly than I thought. The bloke got bladdered mind, but it was fine really. More interestingly, we shared a restaurant with
Dale Winton of all people. This was in Tootsie's in Belsize Park. I must say, he looked pretty haggard... that's what too much plastic surgery, dieting and sunbeds does to you. Made me feel very smug indeedy.
